
Removing a Bearing Wall: What Must Be Designed Before Construction Starts
Opening a kitchen, combining rooms, or creating a larger doorway can dramatically change a home. If the wall is bearing, however, demolition changes the path that roof and floor loads follow to the foundation.
The replacement beam is only one component. A complete design also addresses end supports, connections, concentrated reactions, the structure below, and practical installation constraints.
Confirm what the wall supports
Framing direction is an important clue, but it is not the full answer. A wall may support offset framing, a roof ridge, a girder truss, another bearing wall, or point loads from above. Existing plans should be compared with accessible field conditions.

Do not assume the slab is a footing
A basement or garage slab is commonly intended as a floor surface, not as support for a concentrated structural reaction. Where a new post lands on a slab, the design may require investigation or a new isolated footing.

The contractor is responsible for construction means, methods, and temporary shoring, but permanent drawings should make the intended final load path clear. Sequencing is especially important when installing a flush beam or working beneath occupied areas.
Field verification reduces change orders
Measurements, photographs, selective exposure, and coordination with architectural plans help prevent surprises after demolition. Mechanical ducts, plumbing, electrical work, and limited bearing length can materially affect the final detail.
